This was the question that we were asked to ponder at the panel discussion before the Bournemouth University New Media Writing Prizes were handed out last night. I’m still trying to work that one out…….At the discussion I was frantically opening up all of the windows on my iPhone to remember the sites the panel mentioned – here are some of the most interesting:

iPad Apps
Why The Net Matters
The Magic of Reality

Panel Web Links
The Random House Group
The Literary Platform
JR Carpenter

Companies
Failbetter Games
RJDJ

Games
Night Circus

The two winners of the prize are worth checking out too:

5 Haitis – Simon Kerr (Nottingham) – Student Winner
Loss of Grasp - Serge Bouchardon and Vincent Volckaert (France) – Main Prize Winner

Back in April 2011 I blogged about an article that I’d co-written with Dr Jacqui Taylor which was at that time waiting for review – Munchausen by Internet (MBI): Current research and future directions.

We’ve both had a lot comment and interest in it and were hoping that after submitting it to the Behaviour & Information Technology journal back in March that we’d have heard back one way or the other by the autumn. Sadly in seven months the associate editor hadn’t even managed to find two reviewers for it so we decided to withdraw it in October and try somewhere else.

The second time around, after getting funding from the lovely Bournemouth University OAPF Fund we’ve decided to opt for an open access journal and what better one to try than the JMIR. Submission took place today and we’re hopeful of a more positive journal experience this time around. Fingers crossed you’ll be able to read about it soon….

The main frustration with any kind of journal writing is the length of time it takes to get things progressed and with Internet/Medicine articles which are in a fast moving ever changing arena a delay of this length simply isn’t good enough.

The world of journal publication quickly needs to adapt to a faster more efficient publication model or it’s going to die.

Abstract

In 2010, the School of Health and Social Care developed a collaborative lifeworld led transprofessional curriculum for health and social work disciplines harnessing technology to connect learners to a wider view of evidence based practice. The purpose was to increase use of technology-enhanced learning, introduce lifeworld-led philosophy to the curriculum, release staff potential, and expose students to research undertaken within the School. Delivered to over 600 undergraduate students from community development, midwifery, nursing fields, occupational therapy, paramedic science, physiotherapy and social work, the Exploring Evidence to Guide Practice Unit was facilitated by a number of resources including lectures, group work and a variety of web-based learning materials.

Central to the unit were seventeen web-based case studies which included the human experience of the impact of specific illnesses (such as stroke and living with dementia) and more general experiences (such as social isolation and homelessness). Each case study provided stories and poems, qualitative and quantitative research and policy and practice issues related to specific topics. At the heart of the philosophy underpinning the case studies and unit was an opportunity for students to integrate understandings about different kinds of knowledge for practice, conventional evidence, understandings about the person’s or service user’s experience and the student’s own insights that came from imagining ‘what it was like’ for the person experiencing a condition or situation and encountering human services (Galvin and Todres 2011). The project built on the successful development of Wessex Bay, a virtual community of case scenarios, used as problem-based triggers to engage students in learning activities relating to the residents (Pulman, Scammell and Martin 2009).

This paper discusses the development of the web based case studies and how they integrated visual and audio materials with the aim of enhancing the lifeworld experience of students.

Having just upgraded my work laptop to OS X Lion this morning I’ve come across a really useful tip concerning a problem with launching Xcode 4.1 once you’ve upgraded from Xcode 3.2 (after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion).

You get this cheerful error message “UNCAUGHT EXCEPTION (NSInternalInconsistencyException): Couldn’t load plug-in ‘com.apple.dt.IDE.IDEiPhoneSupport’ while firing fault for extension ‘Xcode.Device.iPhonePlaceholder’” !!!

The fix is to reinstall the latest version of iTunes from a dmg install and this will solve the problem as the link below explains:

As money from CD sales evaporates it’s always interesting to see how innovative musicians are approaching the multimedia world these days. Two real innovators recently have been Thomas Dolby and Bjork.

Thomas Dolby’s Map of the Floating City was a rich multiplayer transmedia game within a living world based around Thomas Dolby’s recent and past back catalogue of songs. Over the last two months I’ve been playing the game which through trades of items allowed users to travel across the sea towards the mythical floating city and at the same time build up a stack of Thomas Dolby mp3′s once all items in a set had been collected. There was a lot more to the game than trading but unfortunately time and work commitments didn’t allow me to fully explore it but it was a really different and interesting experience to some of the other online games I’ve come across.

Whats interesting is that Thomas Dolby funded it’s development himself: ”There is no record company behind this game, no marketing budget, no cynical ulterior motive. I dreamed it up as a way to fuse together all the mythology running through my songs and lyrics over the last 30 years, and to tie it in to my new album. It’s an extension of my own artistic expression. ”

App developers might like to consider getting hold of a copy of last month’s UK Wired where there’s a really interesting article about Bjork’s iPad app - How Björk’s ‘Biophilia’ album fuses music with iPad apps - and the development process behind it.

Some of information came as a surprise to me (for example, Touchpress spending $200,000 on R&D for the Hollow and Crystalline apps and Whitby and Gray selling 200,000 copies of The Elements where I’d have expected this to have made a lot more sales based on the press coverage it received) and again Bjork is releasing the apps independently to the record company.
